This page sets out what SnoutCheck collects when you visit, why it is collected, and what you can ask us to do about it.
Where this applies
Read this as applying to this website and nothing else. Outbound links lead to sites with their own policies, and social platforms answer for their own data collection rather than us.
What the site collects
Loading a page transmits technical data: your IP address, the browser and device you use, which pages you open, the site you came from, and how long you read. We keep it in aggregate and never link it to a person.
Anything else comes from you deliberately – a subscription email address, or the message you send us.
Why we hold it
- Deliver the site and keep it standing.
- Judge, across the whole audience, which dog health and symptoms pages are worth keeping.
- Handle your message and respond to it.
- Mail the newsletter to the people who asked for it.
- Respond to a lawful request when we receive one.
The companies involved
Four outside services touch this data, each under its own privacy policy: Google Analytics (aggregate statistics), Google AdSense (advertising), our hosting provider (server logs), and our email provider (newsletter delivery). They may set their own cookies.
Some processing happens in the United States, since that is where these providers are established. The legal basis for those transfers is set out by each provider, not by us.
Newsletter data
The newsletter works on one address and nothing else: no name is asked for, and the address is used to send the newsletter and for nothing besides. It is not passed to anyone, and the unsubscribe link at the foot of every issue removes it from the list rather than flagging it.
Why we are allowed to
For readers covered by European or United Kingdom law, the lawful bases are consent (newsletter, non-essential cookies), legitimate interest (operating the site, aggregate measurement) and legal obligation. Any consent given can be taken back whenever you like.
Retention
How long things last: hosting logs are rotated by the host, analytics data expires according to the retention setting in Google Analytics, newsletter addresses live until you leave, and contact-form messages are deleted once the conversation is over.
No sale of data
Nothing here is sold, and nothing is handed to a third party for its own marketing. No broker is involved. For California readers, that is the substance of the CCPA opt-out: the sale that the right protects against does not happen.
On profiling
You are not profiled and no automated decision is taken about you. What the measurement produces is totals, not a view of any one reader.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Every newsletter carries an unsubscribe link that works. Your browser settings control cookies. Readers in the EEA, the UK and California have additional statutory rights, and we honour them for everyone.
Children
Readers under 13 are not the audience for SnoutCheck and we do not knowingly hold their data. A message from a parent or guardian is enough to have anything of the sort erased.
How it is protected
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect what we hold. No system on the internet is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Complaints
If you think we have handled your data badly, tell us first through the contact page; it is usually the fastest route. You are equally entitled to complain to your national data protection authority without going through us at all.
Updates
Any revision is dated at the top of the page, and anything substantial is flagged on the site itself.
